A Few Words with James Patrick Kelly

What are the origins of this story?

I wrote “Mr. Boy” during the cyberpunk years both as homage and satire to what the c-punks liked to call The Movement. It was also part of a series of stories I was writing about the Cage family, which were later combined into my novel Wildlife. One of the prompts I was using to engage my muse in these stories was to repurpose some examples of classic architecture. This was at once to do some cultural and/or technological extrapolation but also to use these iconic buildings as metaphor. So the previous stories centered around Stonehenge and the castle of Chillon in Switzerland. I think the most successful of these icons appears in “Mr. Boy.” For a long time, this was my best known story. It was a finalist for the Nebula and Hugo and is one of my most reprinted stories.
